The Indian Railways has announced that the Indian Railway Management Service Examination (IRMSE), also known as the IRMS exam,

Instead, officers will be recruited through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Combined Civil Services Examination (CSE), as recently announced by the Minister of Railways.

An Overview of IRMS

The Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) exam is a highly competitive examination organised by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit officers for the Indian Railways.

The Indian Railways is one of the most extensive & intricate railway systems in the world, making the role of IRMS officers critical in managing & administering various aspects of the railway, including operations, finance, engineering, & personnel management.

IRMS officers have the chance to work on exciting & challenging projects that significantly impact the transportation & logistics infrastructure of the country.

The IRMS exam comprises a written test, an interview, & a medical examination. The written test covers General Awareness, Arithmetic, General Intelligence & Reasoning, & General Science, including questions related to the Indian Railways.

However, Candidate who successfully pass the IRMS exam are appointed as officers in different departments of the Indian Railways, such as administrative & managerial positions, as well as technical & operational roles.

Additionally, IRMS officers are required to undergo rigorous training programs to equip them with the necessary skills & knowledge to perform their duties effectively.

To prepare for the IRMS exam, Candidate must understand the various subjects covered in the written test, such as mathematics, science, & general awareness.

Eligibility Criteria for IRMS

The first thing a candidate should do is determine whether they meet the examination’s eligibility requirements. The following are the IRMS eligibility criteria:

Nationality - To be eligible for the IRMS exam, the c&idate must fulfil one of the following criteria:

Be an Indian citizen

Be a subject of Nepal or Bhutan

Be a Tibetan refugee who arrived in India before January 1, 1962, to settle in India permanently.

 

Age Limit- The candidate must be between 21 to 32 years as of 1st January of the exam year. Candidate from specific categories, such as SC, ST, OBC, ex-servicemen, & others, may qualify for age relaxations.

Education Qualification - A candidate must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or institution in any discipline.

Physical St&ards- The Indian Railways has set physical standards for the post of IRMS officer, & Candidate must meet them. To be precise, these standards include minimum height, chest measurement, & vision standards.

Number of Attempts - Candidate can make any number of attempts for the IRMS exam. However, they must ensure they meet the eligibility criteria at the time of each attempt.

Note: It is crucial to highlight that the eligibility criteria may have some variations from year to year, & Candidate need to refer to the latest notification issued by the UPSC to verify the exact requirements.

 

IRMS Exam Syllabus 

Prelims Exam Syllabus

The IRMS Preliminary Exam comprises two papers, Paper I & Paper II, with each paper carrying 200 marks. Furthermore, the duration of each paper is 2 hours. The exam contains multiple-choice questions of an objective nature.
